PYJÆN, Freshard & Stanley Brinks, No Fox,

  • Cobalt Studios CIC 10-16 Boyd Street Newcastle Upon Tyne (map)

A pay-as-you feel eclectic evening of jazz influenced global sounds.

DIY collective PYJAEN are one of the most recent additions to UK’s exciting and expansive jazz scene. A scene that very often is rooted firmly in jazz but not afraid to deviate, explore and expand. PYJAEN do just this. Described by Jazz Wise Review as having “a groove propelled with dynamism and formidable technique”, seamlessly melds funk, afro-beat and contemporary sounds with nods to hip-hop and disco, whilst acknowledging the traditional era of 1920s jazz and dance music.

Self-motivated and driven by their DIY ethos and interdisciplinary approach, PYJAEN believe in building connections, supporting and collaborating with other artists to build communities and create culture in which everyone feels represented.

Between them Stanley Birks and Freschard play voice, various guitars, bass, sopranino, alto, baritone saxophones, clarinet, mantoura, ocarina, baglamas, fiddledrums, zafzafa, tambourine, washboard, piano, upright bass, piano and bells. This says a lot about what you need to know. Eclectic, fluid – sometimes working together and other times alone, their work has been described as weird, beautiful, maddening genius. It promises to take you from a moody walk in the evening mist of a French city to a vibrant city square somewhere in Europe on a busy market day. Wear your hats on a jaunty angle and celebrate our European heritage.
